Before the Year Ends: 3 Legal Documents Worth Reviewing

Posted by Joel Beck | Dec 15, 2025 | 0 Comments

As the year winds down, many of us feel that familiar mix of holiday activity and quiet reflection. It is a natural time to look back, appreciate what has changed, and set our minds on a more settled start to the New Year.

Amid all the planning and family time, this is also a good moment to make sure your protections still line up with your true wishes. Life moves fast. Families grow, finances shift, and the people we rely on sometimes step into new roles. A short review now can bring steady comfort as you move into January.

1. Your Last Will and Testament

Does it still tell the right story?
Many people write their Will once and never read it again, even though life around them keeps changing.

A few points to look at

  • Beneficiaries: Update this section to reflect any changes due to births, marriages, or divorces.

  • Executors: Confirm that the person listed is still the appropriate choice for the role.

  • Assets: If you've acquired or sold assets mentioned in your Will, ensure the document is updated to match your current intentions.

2. Financial Power of Attorney

Who is holding the keys?
This document allows someone you trust to handle your financial tasks if you cannot. Relationships, health, and availability change, so it is worth checking your choice each year.

What to review

  • Agent: Confirm that the person assigned is still willing and reliable to serve in this role.

  • Contact Info: Ensure their phone number and email address are current and accurate.

3. Advance Directive for Health Care

Are your medical wishes clear?
This document speaks for you when you cannot. Over time, our feelings about care and comfort might change, and the person we named to help might change too.

Questions to ask

  • Have your care preferences or personal views changed in any way?

  • Does your chosen Health Care Agent fully understand their role and have a copy of the document?

The Life Change Checklist

If any of these happened this year, an update might help

  • Marriage or divorce

  • New child or grandchild

  • Purchase or sale of a home or business

  • Death of a spouse or named beneficiary

  • Major change in health for you or your spouse

One Last Step: Keep Everything Secure

Choose one safe, fire proof and easy to reach spot for your estate planning binder. Let your executor or a trusted family member know exactly where it is. Clear directions in a stressful moment can be a true act of care.
